Mirleft South Morocco
Surf Destination Introduction
Mirleft is a beautiful and traditional Berber fishing village renowned for its stunning beaches, fantastic climate and slower pace of life. The village has a very unique cultural diversity and a truly extraordinary sense of community. The waves are fantastic, crowd free and consistent throughout the year. We first visited Mirleft in 2008 and we have since fallen in love with this small town in North Africa. This location in southern Morocco really is a little bit special and is very different from the well known and often crowded, polluted surf areas north of Agadir.
Location and Travel
Morocco is situated in the North West of Africa and Mirleft is located in the South of Morocco on the Atlantic coast. Mirleft is approximately 2 hours by car south of Agadir, 30 minutes north of Sidi Ifni and about 4 hours west of Marrakech.
Low cost air travel is available from most major European airports and you can fly to either Agadir or Marrakech. We do provide transfers but if you are traveling around Morroco then there is an excellent and very affordable bus and coach service available. The two best coach services are Supratours and CTM.
Weather and Climate
Southern Morocco has a very temperate climate and offers an abundance of sunshine and cloudless blue skies. The daytime temperature generally stays in the mid to high 20′s C (70F). Moderate southwest trade winds keep the temperatures down and together with average water temperatures of 18°C help to create excellent surfing conditions.
Local Culture and History
Mirleft emerged as a small village in the early 20th century during French colonial role, but now boasts a subtle mix of original buildings and modern developments that are in keeping with the distinctive traditional local architecture. Most families in Mirleft moved in from the numerous smaller neighbouring mountain villages and now stake claim to several generations of heritage. The majority of the population in this region are of Berber ancestry. The Berber population live throughout the country but with regional differences in languages and culture. In the Souss region the dialect most commonly used is Taschelhit.
Food and Drink
The souk is vibrant and comes alive at night. There are some really fantastic Moroccan, French and Italian restaurants in Mirleft and there is a small bar with a license to serve alcohol in the centre of town. The prices in the restaurants are very reasonable. If you are on a budget or want to try cooking whilst on holiday you can buy fruit, vegetables, meat and fish at the local market. We can even arrange for a chef to cook for you.
Places to Visit, Adventure Sports and Other Activities
It is £35 to hire a car for the day in Morocco and is a great way to explore Mirleft and the surrounding area. We highly recommend visiting the fort in Mirleft, the Spanish art deco town of Sidi Ifni, the famous arches on L’Gzira beach, the ancient town of Taroudant and if you are really up for something different then why not head south and check out camel market in Goulmime also known as the gateway to the Sahara.
If it’s adventure that you are after then we can arrange for you to go paragliding, quad biking, horse riding or mountain biking. If it’s a bit of relaxation after a surf then perhaps a yoga session or even a few hours sea fishing might be the perfect way for you to chill out.
