Introduction – Morocco Surf Culture
The first recorded surfers in Morocco were American military personnel stationed near Mehdia beach, Kenitra on the north west coast in the 1950s. In 1964 Frenchman Claude Bernard began exploring Morocco with Pierre Chalaud, Henri Laggio, and a young local lifeguard and surfer named Mamoune.
In the late 60s and 70s the global hippy movement reached coastal towns such as Essaouira and Taghazout. Vans packed with traveling surfers escaping the harsh winters of Europe became a common sight. Recent years have seen an explosion of popularity in surfing, with Moroccans having access to affordable equipment, especially body-boards. King Mohamed VI has had a huge impact on the sport. His passion for surfing has helped legitimize the sport and strengthen the national circuit.
